Perplexity, mainly known for its AI search capabilities, just unveiled Perplexity Labs, a new platform for its Pro subscribers designed to automate the creation of complex outputs like reports, dashboards, and even simple web applications.

Your AI work crew: Labs sets itself apart from Perplexity's standard search and its "Research" feature. It’s available now for those on the $20-per-month Pro plan across web, iOS, and Android, with desktop apps anticipated. While the core search acts as an "answer machine," the company says using Labs "is like having a team."

Project power-up: The platform can reportedly dedicate 10 minutes or more to tasks, leveraging deep web browsing and code execution. Perplexity claims Labs can deliver in minutes what might otherwise require days of effort. Users prompt the system, which then works autonomously, allowing for oversight to track progress, adjust steps, or provide further direction.

From assets to actions: All generated materials, including code and documents, are organized in an "Assets" tab for download. Furthermore, Labs can construct and launch straightforward interactive web applications, like basic dashboards, via a dedicated 'App' tab, bypassing the need for external development tools.

Broader horizons: This new platform likely signals Perplexity's larger ambition to diversify beyond its foundational search technology, a strategic direction also suggested by its Comet web browser preview and the Read.vc acquisition.

The bottom line: Perplexity is betting that users will pay for an AI that doesn't just find information, but actively builds with it, potentially reshaping how professionals and creators approach project development.

Meanwhile, in the agentic AI arena: Google's I/O 2025 showcased agentic features moving into Labs via Project Mariner, alongside new developer tools for Gemini 2.5 to build such experiences, signaling a future where AI agents could transform web interaction. Not to be outdone, Microsoft Build introduced "Agent Space," its own platform for AI agent development. Elsewhere, DeepSeek's upgraded R1 model is challenging established players like Anthropic with advanced reasoning, while Salesforce is reportedly rolling out AgentForce to automate business workflows.
