The Challenge

With 141 offices across 81 countries, agricultural commodities company ED&F Man operates in locations with dramatically different levels of connectivity. As the company shifted to remote work, securing that global workforce became even more challenging.

Employees were no longer consistently working behind corporate firewalls, yet still needed access to SaaS applications and sensitive company data. ED&F Man wanted to extend its on-premises security and data loss prevention controls to employees wherever they worked.

Traditional proxy solutions, which route traffic to external infrastructure for inspection and then back to users, couldn't deliver the experience the company needed.

“The latencies were too high, the bandwidth wasn't enough, and we basically were affecting service to the end users,” said Glyn Turner, Global Technology Systems Director at ED&F Man.

The company evaluated several proxy solutions. After those proofs of concept failed to solve the problem, ED&F Man began looking for a different approach.

The Solution

Turner discovered the Island Enterprise Browser while searching for a way to secure web traffic without sacrificing performance. At first, the idea that a browser could solve a security problem was unexpected.

“I would never have thought that a browser could fix the problems that we'd identified,” said Turner.

With Island, security controls could be applied directly within the browser rather than routing traffic through external infrastructure. ED&F Man could give employees the same controls whether they were at home, in a hotel, at an internet cafe, or in the office.

“The data doesn't have to leave and be analyzed and go backwards and forwards,” said Turner. “That resolved all of those issues around the speed, the latency, and the performance for the end user.”

Because Island offered a familiar browser experience, adoption was quick. Employees could simply work as usual while ED&F Man maintained consistent security controls across its distributed workforce.

Results

Island gave ED&F Man a new way to secure remote work across its global operations without compromising employee productivity.

Whether employees work from home, an office, or while traveling, ED&F Man can apply the same policies. “We've got the same control set across all devices,” said Turner.

By applying controls within the browser, ED&F Man eliminated the need to send traffic back and forth to external infrastructure, addressing the latency and bandwidth issues it encountered with proxy solutions.

The familiar browser experience helped employees adopt Island quickly without introducing unnecessary friction into their work.

“Forget you are running Island, you're just using a web browser,” said Turner. “You're doing your job and the technology's not getting in the way of your job. It just works.”
