The Challenge

When Silicon Labs decided to give AI Enterprise to every employee, the security team faced a familiar question: what stops a researcher from pasting confidential information into a prompt? AI tools don't come with enterprise data protection. Silicon Labs needed it. Fast.

Silicon Laboratories is a pioneer in wireless and embedded IoT technology with 2025 revenue of $787.4 million. The company employs over 2,000 people, works with contractors and third-party integrated circuit fabricators, and runs operations in over a dozen countries. The leadership team wanted AI implemented quickly and securely.

The Solution

About four years ago, Silicon Labs used Island to resolve a technical issue affecting a small group in China. Silicon Labs ran a successful proof-of-concept trial, then implemented Island for the users.

"We wanted the users to have access to all our systems and resources," explains Michael Telfeyan, the company's Security Operations Manager, "but we also wanted to keep those resources protected."

"We realized Island could extend our network without procuring hardware or having the standup of a VPN [virtual private network]," he says.

Then the company's senior leaders decided to go all-in with AI. Everyone agreed the AI tools would need security controls. But which ones? And how quickly could they be deployed? The team decided to give the Island Enterprise Browser to all employees.

"The decision to pair with Island was almost a no-brainer," says Shah of the CTO's office, "because Island takes away the security risk."

With Island, Silicon Labs moved from blocking AI to governing it. Island routes employees to the corporate AI tools that fit their role, from coding assistants for developers to writing aids for other teams. When an employee signs into a personal AI account, Island redirects them to the sanctioned corporate tenant automatically. Corporate data stays inside corporate boundaries.

Results

The result is visibility and oversight that doesn't slow the business down. Governance lives inside the workflow, not bolted onto it. Engineers use AI freely. Intellectual property stays where it belongs.

The rollout was fast. Speed was a priority, but security was non-negotiable. Silicon Labs leveraged the Island Enterprise Browser to provide 2,500 employees and contractors with access to AI Enterprise in under two weeks. By enforcing security policies directly within the browser, Island eliminated the need for  months of complex back-end configurations, enabling a full migration in a fraction of the traditional timeline. The full migration took under two weeks.

Without Island, Telfeyan estimates the same rollout would have taken his team as long as two months.

Even in high-risk travel scenarios where VPNs are impractical, Silicon Labs turns to Island for secure access that mirrors the in-office experience. "It's a massive leap," Telfeyan says. "Island gives us the ability to extend not just the capabilities of using AI, but also give our entire network access to our internal resources and tools."

Island protects Silicon Labs' AI users and data with security and monitoring capabilities consumer browsers cannot deliver. "Island today is the cornerstone of how we do AI," Telfeyan says.

The security team also gets granular visibility across every AI tool used at Silicon Labs, not just the sanctioned ones. They can see who is using what, and where corporate data is going.

"From my perspective," Telfeyan says, "AI and Island are so closely linked, we wouldn't have one without the other."

Silicon Labs deployed AI in two weeks. The foundation it built is ready for whatever AI comes next.
